Travelling from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore by coach, is it better than AirAsia?
Let’s be real. We all have a love-hate relationship with the KL-Singapore route. We love the food and shopping and the wonderful tourist attractions in Singapore, but we of course absolutely hate the journey to getting there.
To get to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur, we basically have just two choices:
- Fly: Pay through the nose, fight the jam to KLIA, wait in long queues, and then spend another 30 to 45 minutes getting from Changi to the city centre.
- Drive: Endure the legendary jam at the Causeway and risk your car getting scratched (or just feeling the pain of the VEP application)
That is why I am Team Bus. But not just any bus. If you do it right, the bus is actually the most relaxing way to get to Singapore. If you do it wrong, you end up at Tuas Checkpoint at 7 PM on a Friday wanting to cry.
Here is the “survival guide” for Malaysians heading south.
1. The “Atas” Option vs. The “Jimat” Option
First, stop looking for the cheapest RM40 ticket on RedBus. Just don’t. You are going to be stuck in a metal tube for 5-6 hours. Spending an extra RM30-RM50 changes your life.
The “Atas” (Luxury) Picks:
Aeroline (Connecting People in PJ/Sunway/KLCC to Singapore by Bus)
- Where to catch it:
- 1 Utama Shopping Centre (New Wing): Perfect if you are in Damansara/TTDI.
- Sunway Pyramid: Ideal for the Subang/Sunway crowd.
- Corus Hotel (Jalan Ampang): The classic spot for KL City dwellers.
- Departure Times: They have convenient morning slots (often 9:00 AM or 9:30 AM), which gets you into Singapore nicely by late afternoon for check-in.
- Why it wins:
- Lounge Access: You wait in a comfortable lounge inside the mall, not by the roadside.
- The Food: Hot meals served onboard (usually a choice of chicken rice, noodles, or vegetarian) plus hot coffee/tea.
- Convenience: For the 1 Utama and Sunway pick-ups, you can easily get dropped off or grab a Grab without fighting the KL city center jam.
- Drop-off: HarbourFront Centre, Singapore (Next to VivoCity).
- Transtar Solitaire: Mega VVIP Experience

- Why: Double-decker bus with massive and luxury massage chairs. Some buses have personal TV screens.
- Route: Drops off at Golden Mile or Genting Lane.
- First Coach: The Suburban Hero.
- Why: If you live in Subang/PJ or Bangsar, take this.
- Pick-up: Subang Parade, One Utama, or Bangsar. You skip the jam into KL city center.
- Drop-off: Star Vista (near Buona Vista MRT) or Novena Square. Very convenient.
The “Jimat” (Budget) Picks:
- KKKL / Starmart:
- Why: Reliable, frequent, and departs from TBS (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan).
- Cost: Usually RM50–RM70.
- Warning: Legroom is decent, but don’t expect meals or stewards. Bring your own snacks.
2. The Border Crossing
This is the only part that sucks. Here is exactly what happens so you don’t look blur.
Step 1: Malaysia Exit (Johor Checkpoint)
- The bus will stop. Leave your big luggage on the bus. Just take your passport and phone.
- Go up, scan your passport at the autogate (or counter), and run back to the bus.
- Pro Tip: Memorize your bus number plate! Hundreds of buses look the same. Take a photo of it before you hop off.
Step 2: The No Man’s Land
- You get back on the bus for a short 5-10 minute ride across the bridge (Causeway or Second Link).
Step 3: Singapore Entry (Tuas or Woodlands)
- Take EVERYTHING down. Luggage, backpack, that plastic bag of snacks—everything.
- Go up the escalator. Scan your passport.
- Put your bag through the X-ray machine.
- Go down to the bus bay. Find your bus. Load your bag. Collapse in your seat.
3. Important: The SG Arrival Card (Don’t Forget!)
This catches so many Malaysians off guard. You cannot just walk in anymore.
- You MUST fill in the SG Arrival Card (SGAC) online.
- It is free. Do not pay for it on scam sites. Use the official ICA website or the “MyICA” app.
- Fill it in 3 days before you travel or even on the morning of the trip.
- If you don’t do this, you will be stuck at the immigration counter pressing your phone while the uncle behind you tsk-tsks loudly.
4. Insider Tips for a Smooth Ride
- Jacket is Mandatory: Malaysian bus drivers train for the Winter Olympics. It is always freezing. Bring a hoodie.
- Data Roaming: Turn on your roaming before you cross the border. You might need internet to show your SG Arrival Card email if the officer asks (rare, but happens).
- Toilet Strategy: The toilets at the checkpoints are… okay, but often crowded. Try to go at the R&R stop (usually Pagoh or Machap) before you hit Johor.
- Avoid Friday Evenings: If you leave KL at 4:00 PM on a Friday, prepare for a 7-8 hour journey. The jam at the border is no joke. Saturday morning departures are usually much smoother.
Verdict
If you are staying in KL city, take Aeroline. The convenience of Corus Hotel and HarbourFront is unbeatable. If you are in PJ/Subang, take First Coach. If you are on a budget, KKKL from TBS is solid.
